THE

PERSISTENCE

OF

poverty

Let’s talk about rhetorical situation and my final English 2010 project. Rhetoric communication is used to modify the perspectives of others. Primarily, it is an awareness of the language choices we make. Anyone who is unaware of how crucial rhetoric is to effective communication. My rhetorical situation to a closer look at the persistence of homelessness and hunger. It also dove into what and how our state is currently handling homeless individuals. Finally, it ties together with how important and great community gardens are. The benefits for everyone, by making good use of vacant city lots and adding peace to cities. Growing healthy food for local shelter and the community. Money earned from selling vegetables which makes affordable minimum wage to those who are homeless trying to get back on their feet, while providing individuals with high quality skills, like leadership skills, listening skills, and communication skills.

What got me started to create my final project was from my Service Learning in the Bruin Pantry. The programs I am in that have given me a more in depth look at these heavy and tough topics like hunger, community gardening and capacity building. Also, from my information effect project, which was a flyer with a QR code linked to my Eportfolio. I wanted to approach it with no politics. It Tied in by my purpose for the community to work together to find alternative solutions, while helping each other to address homelessness/poverty.

There are so many resources out there and I gathered mine from the Service Learning I did. Which was in the Bruin Pantry at Salt Lake Community College. I used our own data base from the SLCC library. I also used a lot of information from what I have seen, heard, and my very own personal struggle as I make my way through college, with no home, short on cash, and constantly looking for something to eat. I also witnessed firsthand through Alt-Spring Break about gardening and their own program.

From this I learned that I am not alone, many other students/individuals are going through the same thing as me. From this project I learned just how powerful the persuasion effect really is when using logos, ethos, and pathos. I learned more about gardening, healthy eating, where to get real information on a subject. I learned from this project that I do have a voice and when using it properly and respectfully things can take root.

I have a better understanding for the art of writing and speaking well. By being persuasive and knowing how to compose successful writing and presentations. I can think logically to discover wrong or weak arguments. I can build a good case on a controversial topic, and to overcome the all-too-common fear of speaking in public. I make it easier to deliver crisp and well-prepared speeches. Clear thinking, a good argument, and logical discussions are essential to my academic success in any field. The more I understand how to criticize and analyze what I read and study in Music, Mathematics or the Modern Languages, the stronger my education.

There are certain concepts, or certain learning experiences, that resemble passing through a portal, from which a new perspective opens. This is me now, it allows things that I formerly did not know, to come into view. The threshold concept permits a new and previously inaccessible way of thinking about something. It represents a transformed way of how I understand, or interpret, or view something. Writing is a resource people use to do things, be things, and make things in the world. Rhetoric provides a method for studying the work that language and writing do. Writing is a form of action. Through writing people respond to problems and can create change in the world. Writing is a process of deliberation.  It involves identifying and enacting choices, strategies, and moves. Meaningful writing is achieved through sustained engagement in literate practices and through revision. The meanings and the effects of writing are contingent on situation, on readers, and on a text’s purposes/uses.
